Why I like Delta

There’s a lot of heat and lots of talk about why airlines suck these days. Long lines, long waits, bad customer service, paying for checked luggage, $100 fee for changing a flight (shame on your JetBlue), etc…
In spite of it all, I want to take a quick moment and point out two of the things I think that Delta is doing correctly. They might be small things, but I’m all about the “small things” and those are big in my book.
- 24hr full refund policy on delta.com - Yes, that’s correct. If you didn’t know, you can order your tickets on delta.com and if you change you mind within 24 hours, you can change or cancel your reservation and get a full refund. I don’t know if any other airlines do this, but this is one reason why I love delta.com. Very often I’m booking my tickets late at night and I’m extremely tired. I can then wake up the next morning and check my itinerary to make sure it’s correct. Freakin’ awesome.
- Skymiles expiration date - No guessing games as to when I’m gonna loose my 69,625 skymiles! I subscribe to the Delta Insider newsletter, whic means I get a snapshot of my skymiles account activities on a monthly basis sent directly to my gmail account. The best part is that my miles balance, activites, and expiration date get shown in a miss-it-and-you-are-an-idiot region. No more logging into my account (like United) and realize that I just lost 14,000 miles. Or having to email customer service (at NWA) and receiving a long-winded generic reply that didn’t answer the simple question of “when do my miles expire?” Hopefully the NWA-Delta merger takes the good things from Delta.

You know what I like? Delta Song. They have actual food on the airlines. You have to buy it, but it’s not even really all that expensive. Like an $8 sandwich that’s actually on the level of something you’d get at Panera. They have a whole menu of stuff, too, so it’s not just one or two things.
I haven’t flown them in a while, mostly because I haven’t been going where they go, but that was definitely one of the best experiences I’ve had on a plane. Good service, actual food, computer / TV for each seat… you just can’t beat it.
Mostly I fly whatever’s cheapest, but if more companies started doing what Song does, they might actually get some more business.
