Make Gyms Free

Why is it so expensive to stay in shape and be healthy in this country? Everything that’s healthy, (think organic and wholesome foods) is usually expensive. Thanks you Whole Foods, whose sole business model is to rip people off by making everyone pay a premium for foods that should be made widely available.

And what about exercise? In cities like New York and Boston, it’s not uncommon for a gym membership to cost $50 - $100 per month. All this talk about our country’s obesity epidemic and how people don’t get enough exercise, why doesn’t the government subsidize things like a gym membership to make it more affordable for the everyday people? Sure, you might say that $50 isn’t really that much money. But if a person is earning only $1500 a month and half of it is already going towards rent, I’d imagine it to be tough to drop $50 out of the remaining $750 towards a gym membership, especially when that person has to keep himself fed.

So, why can’t gyms be free?  Isn’t it better to lower the monetary bar for good health by making exercise facilities widely accessible, than trying to derail our obesity problem through artificial means like shortcut pills, expensive surgery, and fad diets?
