Personal Goals for 2008
Going along with having new year resolutions for 2008, here are the ones I’d like to tackle:
- Become a better chef - I plan to cook a new dish every week for 52 weeks straight. A new dish, in my own terms, is something that I’ve personally never made before. I hope this goal will help me expand my culinary repertoire in learning new techniques and cooking with new ingredients. You can keep an eye of my progress over at http://www.platinumchef.com/category/52-weeks-challenge/
- Relearn Chinese - My Chinese has gone to the gutters during the years I’ve been in US. As a Hong Kong-born FOB, my native language is Cantonese. I spent the first 10 years of my life living in Hong Kong memorizing traditional Chinese characters to the 4th grade reading level. I say memorizing because that’s how Chinese characters in the Cantonese language are learned, as there’s no phonetic system for pronunciation. You pretty much have to know a character by heart, one of the reasons why the Chinese language is extremely difficult to master. To the best of my knowledge, I was a pretty decent student back then, and I think it’s time to get back to my roots. So I’m gonna start by practicing and learning Chinese characters for 30 minutes each night, 3 times a week.
- Read More - I’m a knowledge junkie, so this one is self-explanatory.
- Start a web-based project - I’ve always wanted to do this but never had the time. So hopefully something will come to fruition.
Well, that’s it. Those are the resolutions I’ve made for myself in the upcoming year. Let’s see how it goes.
(Edit) In regards to goal #2, I was motivated by the fact that an American-born Korean friend of mine from a rival ACC school speaks better Mandarin than me. And I don’t like to be out-performed.
